Ever wished someone could swoop in and save you from creating never-ending moving lists?
WELL, THAT WISH JUST CAME TRUE!
Leaving home and starting fresh can seem daunting.
What to take with you, what to buy, what will be there when you arrive at your new place? It can be overwhelming even for seasoned movers.
Welcome to Leaving Home!
I have moved a lot. I now have moving down to a fine art, it’s almost militant.
The first rule of moving: Start Decluttering
Donate, Sell or Store things you don’t use. During each move I have tossed out so many useless items it’s ridiculous not to mention wasteful! You either decide what you are taking with you now or cart that stuff around with you for eternity.
The second rule of moving: Sort out your money
It’s no use committing to a new home when you won’t be able to enjoy your life if the mortgage or rent goes up. Make sure your income can cover all the upfront fees, utility fees, parking fees, etc.
Third rule of moving: Work out what you actually do and don’t need to live well
It’s easy to get carried away thinking you need all the things in the homeware store. You don’t.
When you are setting up your new home, plan to have only the things you will actually use. A frying pan with a lid and a good quality knife are my favourite kitchen tools. Other gadgets you might only use once or twice are not worth it – I’m looking at you space-eating Ice-Cream Maker.
Use the New Home Checklist to cross off all the items you already have, highlight the ones you need and add them to your shopping or housewarming wish list.
Stages of Moving
To help organise your move so you don’t get overwhelmed we have broken down out checklists and worksheets into the following 5 stages:
Planning to Move
The beginning stages: sort your money, declutter and start looking at places so you can gauge what type of property you can afford on your budget. Start a dedicated savings plan to cover all the costs related to your move.
Committing to Moving
Before you sign on the dotted line prepare your deposits and bank guarantees, have a list of questions to ask the property agents, give notice for your current home. Take stock of what you are taking with you, what you are selling or donating and what you need to purchase.
Moving
Lets get physical. This is the cleaning, packing, cleaning unpacking phase. The most exciting stage of them all!
Living Well
New Home – New You. This is your chance to start some good self care routines.
How will I help you?
Since I moved out of my family home I have lived with friends, on my own, in share houses with strangers (highly recommended!), and in a hotel (so many stories…). I’ve moved back home to live with my Mum at a couple of intervals and now I live in my forever home with my husband.
The best things I have learned are:
- you don’t need a lot of expensive stuff (comfortable bedding is a must);
- make a budget and stick to it; and
- don’t wait to buy a plunger until you need a plunger.
Start living your best life!
Whether you are moving out of home for the first time, moving to a different state or country, upsizing or downsizing we have resources to help make leaving your current home simpler.
