Decluttering is different when you are moving out of home for the first time. You either make some tough decisions now or you cart all your stuff around with you forever.

Rather than shoving your everything randomly into boxes and bags, take some time to declutter before you move. You might be surprised by how little you need when you move out.

As soon as you start thinking about moving out – start decluttering.

Our biggest tip is to give yourself time – you can’t do everything in one day! It’s taken your lifetime to accumulate all of your stuff – pace yourself so you don’t get overwhelmed and either keep everything or throw away something you regret later.

5 Declutter Checklist Tips

Leave the sentimental stuff until last If you start with sentimental clutter, it’s going to slow you down;
Get over the guilt. You can feel guilty for many reasons, from wasting money on past purchases to getting rid of unwanted gifts;
Start with 4 boxes and label them TOSS, DONATE, SELL & STORE. Every time you come across an item you have not used for a while – put it in one of the boxes;
“Just in case items” If you are keeping things because you might need them later, set them aside and revisit again closer to your moving date. You might find that you can let these things go and replace them at a later date or it might be something you can hire/borrow down the track;
What’s left after your declutter? Hopefully, you are left with only the things you need for your new space, some boxes to store and a sense of satisfaction.

Decluttering should be high on your moving checklist.
